I agree! Too many times I saw situations that could have been quelled by officers if they used reason and compassion with the person or persons they were confronting. Instead they became confrontational using hard words and bad language. Sometimes to the point of physical combat.
I was able to talk an individual into going back in his cell by using reason and human respect. The inmates respected me for it and complied with my request to go back into the cell. The other officer involved was very angry with me because he wanted to use a higher level of force on the inmate. How you talk to people makes a real difference in how they react.
